Emotional Intelligence in Action: Building SEL Skills With Young People
FREE & Virtual: 10am-12pm on November 5th and 12th
Eric Golden @ The Flourish Lab
Focus: Knowledge + Skills + Social Connectedness
We talk a lot about social-emotional learning for young people, but adults are working on many of the same skills. We just tend to call it emotional intelligence. In this two-session training, we’ll start with ourselves by exploring how our thoughts, emotions, reactions, and communication shape the way we show up with young people. Then we’ll turn the lens toward youth. What does emotional intelligence look like at different ages and stages of development? How do we recognize the skills young people already have and the ones they’re still developing? Participants will practice looking beyond behavior to better understand what a young person may be thinking, feeling, needing, and learning. Through reflection, conversation, practice, and real experiences between sessions, participants will strengthen their own emotional intelligence while discovering simple ways to support SEL throughout everyday interactions.
Takeaways:
- A practical understanding of the connection between adult emotional intelligence and youth SEL.
- Greater awareness of how our own emotions and reactions influence the young people around us.
- A developmental lens for recognizing how social-emotional skills can look different across ages and stages.
- Tools for looking beyond behavior and identifying the skills a young person may still be developing.
- Simple ways to model and coach emotional intelligence without turning every moment into an SEL lesson.
- Strategies for using everyday interactions, challenges, mistakes, and successes as opportunities for connection and growth.
