Focus: Knowledge + Skills + Social Connectedness

We aren’t only helping young people succeed in our programs today. We’re helping them build skills they’ll carry into tomorrow. Communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem solving, accountability, resilience, navigating feedback, and managing emotions aren’t just school or workplace skills. They’re human skills. In this two-session training, participants will explore how SEL supports young people as they grow through school, relationships, future careers, and life. We’ll examine how learning and communication change across development, including how working with young people differs from working with parents, caregivers, coworkers, and other adults. Participants will explore how relationships, relevance, challenge, voice, choice, and meaningful opportunities to practice can turn everyday program experiences into opportunities for growth. Through hands-on application, reflection, and collaborative problem solving, participants will put the pieces together and create intentional experiences that help young people build confidence, independence, and skills that last.

Takeaways:

  • A clear connection between emotional intelligence, SEL, healthy development, and skills young people will use throughout life.
  • An understanding of how relationships create safer conditions for young people to participate, take appropriate risks, make mistakes, and try again.
  • Strategies for building communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem solving, accountability, resilience, and leadership through everyday experiences.
  • Practical ways to adjust voice, choice, relevance, ownership, and challenge for different ages and developmental stages.
  • An introduction to adult learning theory and how learning, motivation, and communication may shift when working with youth versus parents, caregivers, coworkers, and other adults.
  • Tools for turning everyday activities into experiences that intentionally build confidence, connection, independence, and transferable skills.
  • An action plan for creating environments where young people feel connected, challenged, supported, and prepared for what’s next.
