Focus: Knowledge + Social Connectedness
Consistency matters: when youth hear the same SEL language and experience the same practices at afterschool and at home, they feel safe, supported, and connected. This session equips staff with simple, practical SEL tools that are easy to use in both settings. Participants will explore youth-led projects that naturally invite caregiver engagement and discover low-barrier ways to bring families into the SEL process.
Objectives:
- Shared SEL language that youth, staff, and families can all use.
- Simple practices (breathing, check-ins, gratitude rituals, conflict repair) adaptable across settings.
- Youth-led projects that bridge program and home (gratitude jars, problem-solving boards, family goal-setting).
- Strategies for engaging parents at pickup, through take-home prompts, and in small moments of connection.
- A framework for introducing one SEL tool at a time and reinforcing it with families.
